What is a Smart Meter?

A smart meter is a modern digital device that replaces traditional electricity meters, providing accurate and real-time tracking of your energy usage. With a smart energy meter, you gain better insights into your energy consumption, helping you manage costs and improve efficiency.

Benefits of smart meter installation for Central Coast homes

Upgrading to a smart meter is one of the simplest ways Central Coast homeowners and businesses can take control of their energy usage.

Here are five reasons why smart meter installation makes a real difference:

R

No more estimated bills:
Say goodbye to quarterly estimated electricity bills. A smart meter sends accurate consumption data directly to your energy retailer every 30 minutes, so every bill reflects exactly what you have used — nothing more, nothing less.

R

Monitor your usage via app:
Most energy retailers offer a free app that connects to your smart meter, giving you a real-time view of your daily, weekly and monthly energy consumption. Spot usage patterns, identify energy-hungry appliances and make informed decisions about how and when you use power.

R

Solar-ready technology:
Already have solar panels or planning to install them? Smart meters are fully compatible with solar systems and automatically track the energy your panels feed back into the grid. This means your feed-in tariff credits are recorded accurately every single time.

R

Access time-of-use tariffs:
Smart meters unlock access to time-of-use electricity tariffs, which means you can shift high-energy tasks like running the dishwasher or doing laundry to off-peak hours and pay a lower rate. Over a year, this can add up to meaningful savings on your power bills.

R

No more meter reader visits:
Because your smart meter transmits data remotely to your retailer, there is no longer any need for a meter reader to visit your property. No access required, no missed appointments and no disruption to your day.

Smart Meters Central Coast

At Langshaw Electrical we are aligned with certain retailer to install SMART meters on customers installations. We have all the resources to install the latest in technology.

Why Smart meters?

From 1 December 2017, all new installations and upgrades will be installed with a SMART meter. It’s called”Power of Choice”. Its a just like your old meter, but will measure your consumption every half hour and send the data back to base. This saves the time for a meter reading every quarter and gives you a more accurate breakdown of your energy consumption over a 24 hour period. Most Retailers give you the ability to view the data via an app on your tablet or phone.

Frequently asked questions about smart meter installation

How long does smart meter installation take on the Central Coast?

In most cases, smart meter installation takes between one and two hours. The exact time depends on the condition of your existing electrical installation and whether any additional service work – such as a phase upgrade or meter panel alteration – is required before the new meter can be connected. Our Level 2 ASP electrician will give you a clear time estimate during your free site assessment so you know what to expect on installation day.

Do I need a Level 2 electrician for smart meter installation in NSW?

Yes. Under NSW regulations and Ausgrid network rules, only an Accredited Service Provider (ASP) with a Level 2 electrician licence is authorised to install, alter, or connect smart meters to the distribution network. A standard electrician cannot legally perform this work. Langshaw Electrical holds full Ausgrid ASP accreditation, which means all smart meter installations we carry out are fully compliant and insured.

How much does smart meter installation cost on the Central Coast?

The cost varies depending on your current meter setup, whether a phase upgrade is needed, and any additional service work required at your property. Because every installation is different, Langshaw Electrical provides a free, no-obligation quote after a site assessment so you get an accurate price for your specific situation rather than a generic estimate. Contact us today to arrange your free quote.

Can I get a smart meter installed if I have solar panels?

Absolutely. Smart meters are fully compatible with solar panel systems and are in fact the best metering option for solar owners. A smart meter accurately records both the energy you consume from the grid and the energy your solar panels export back to it, ensuring your feed-in tariff credits are calculated correctly. If you are planning to install solar in the future, upgrading to a smart meter now also means your metering infrastructure is already in place.

Which energy retailers does Langshaw Electrical work with for smart meters?

Langshaw Electrical is aligned with a number of energy retailers operating on the Ausgrid NSW network to carry out smart meter installations for their customers. When you contact us, we will confirm your current retailer’s requirements and handle the coordination between your retailer and the Ausgrid network on your behalf. This takes the administrative burden off you and ensures the process runs smoothly from quote to activation.

Smart meter vs analogue meter - what's the difference?

If you are still weighing up whether to upgrade, here is a straightforward comparison of smart meters and traditional analogue meters across the three areas that matter most to Central Coast households.

r

Billing accuracy

Analogue meters are read manually by a meter reader, typically once every quarter. If a reading cannot be taken, your retailer estimates your bill based on historical usage, which can result in over- or undercharging that only corrects itself at your next actual reading. A smart meter eliminates this entirely by transmitting real consumption data to your retailer every 30 minutes, so every bill is based on exactly what you have used.

g

Remote monitoring

With an analogue meter, checking your energy usage means waiting for your quarterly bill or calling your retailer. A smart meter connects directly to your retailer’s digital platform, giving you on-demand access to your consumption data through a smartphone app. You can track usage in near real time, set alerts, and identify where your household is using the most energy.

Solar and off-peak rates

Analogue meters cannot distinguish between the time of day electricity is used, which means you cannot access time-of-use tariffs, the rates that charge less during off-peak hours and more during peak times. They also cannot accurately track solar feed-in separately from grid consumption. Smart meters handle both, unlocking access to off-peak tariff plans and ensuring your solar feed-in credits are recorded precisely, which can make a meaningful difference to your annual electricity costs.
